Ambrosia maple
The bench is Inspired by the post-and-lintel system in architecture. This ancient method of construction involving the use of vertical and horizontal elements is simple yet so fundamental. There is a natural balance and strength to the formation.
After many visits to the lumber yard, I chose ambrosia maple for the bench. The greyish-blue to brown streaks against the pale background caused by an infestation of the ambrosia beetle evoke a sense of movement. The material echoes with the subtle curves of the bench, creating a quiet conversation.
